Twenty-seven to receive faculty awards at virtual ceremony

Twenty-seven University of Michigan faculty members are receiving awards this fall in recognition of their notable contributions in the areas of teaching, mentoring, service and scholarship. They will be honored at a virtual Faculty Awards Celebration on Oct. 19.

Here’s a look at the awards and the recipients:

Distinguished University Professorships

The Board of Regents created the Distinguished University Professorships in 1947 to recognize senior faculty for exceptional scholarly or creative achievement, national and international reputation, and superior records of teaching, mentoring and service. Faculty selected for the recognition, in consultation with the dean of the school or college in which he or she holds an appointment, name the professorship after a person of distinction in his or her field of interest. The duration of the appointment is unlimited. Newly appointed Distinguished University Professors are expected to deliver an inaugural lecture. The recipients are:

Nicholas Kotov, Irving Langmuir Distinguished University Professor of Chemical Sciences and Engineering. He also is the Joseph B. and Florence V. Cejka Professor of Engineering, and professor of chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, and macromolecular science and engineering in the College of Engineering.

Arthur Lupia, Gerald R. Ford Distinguished University Professor of Political Science, professor of political science, LSA; and research professor, Center for Political Studies, Institute for Social Research.

• Annemarie Sullivan Palincsar, Ann L. Brown Distinguished University Professor of Education, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, Jean and Charles R. Walgreen Jr. Professor of Reading and Literacy, professor of education, and chair of the Educational Studies Program, School of Education.   

• Lutgarde M. Raskin, Vernon L. Snoeyink Distinguished University Professor of Environmental Engineering, Altarum/ERIM Russell D. O’Neal Professor of Engineering, professor of civil and environmental engineering, College of Engineering; and associate dean for academic programs and initiatives, Rackham Graduate School.

• Donald R. Zak, Alexander H. Smith Distinguished University Professor of Ecology, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, professor of natural resources, School for Environment and Sustainability; professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, adjunct professor of earth and environmental science, LSA; and professor of environment, School for Environment and Sustainability and LSA.

Distinguished Faculty Achievement Awards

The Distinguished Faculty Achievement Awards honor senior faculty who consistently have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the areas of scholarly research or creative endeavors, teaching and mentoring of students and junior colleagues, service and other activities. The recipients are:

• Yan Chen, Daniel Kahneman Collegiate Professor of Information, professor of information, School of Information; and research professor, Research Center for Group Dynamics, Institute for Social Research.

David Dunning, professor of psychology, LSA; and faculty associate, Research Center for Group Dynamics, Institute for Social Research.

• Susan Parrish, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, associate chair and professor of English language and literature, LSA.  

• Pramod Sangi Reddy, associate chair and professor of mechanical engineering, professor of materials science and engineering, and of electrical engineering and computer science, College of Engineering.

• Christopher Ruf, Frederick Bartman Collegiate Professor of Climate and Space Science, professor of climate and space sciences and engineering, and of electrical engineering and computer science, College of Engineering.

Faculty Recognition Awards

The Faculty Recognition Awards are intended for mid-career faculty members who have demonstrated remarkable contributions to the university through achievements in scholarly research or creative endeavors; excellence as a teacher, adviser and mentor; and distinguished participation in service activities of the university and elsewhere. Eligible candidates include full professors with no more than four years in rank, and tenured associate professors. The recipients are:

Qiaozhu Mei, professor of information, School of Information; and professor of electrical engineering and computer science, College of Engineering.

• M. Remi Yergeau, associate professor of English language and literature, and associate professor and associate director of the Digital Studies Institute, LSA.

• Emmanuelle Marquis, professor of materials science and engineering, College of Engineering.

• Justin Kasper, professor of climate and space sciences and engineering, College of Engineering.

• Andries Coetzee, professor of linguistics and director of the African Studies Center in the International Institute, LSA; and senior adviser (African engagement) to the provost.

University Diversity and Social Transformation Professorships

The University Diversity and Social Transformation Professorships, which were launched in 2019, honor senior faculty whose work has promoted the university’s goals around diversity, equity and inclusion. Recipients will hold their initial appointments for five years. They also will receive special faculty fellow status at the National Center for Institutional Diversity and spend at least one semester as a faculty fellow-in-residence. The recipients are:

• Vincent Hutchings, University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor, Hanes Walton Jr. Collegiate Professor of Political Science and Afroamerican and African Studies, professor of political science, LSA; and research professor, Center for Political Studies, Institute for Social Research.

Amy Schulz, University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor and professor of health behavior and health education, School of Public Health.

• Daphne Watkins, University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor, professor of social work, School of Social Work; and director of the Vivian A. and James L. Curtis Center for Health Equity Research and Training.

• Celeste Watkins-Hayes, University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor, Jean E. Fairfax Collegiate Professor of Public Policy, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy; and professor of sociology, LSA.

• Camille Wilson, University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor and professor of education, School of Education.

Regents’ Award for Distinguished Public Service

John Greden

The Regents’ Award for Distinguished Public Service recognizes public service activities that relate closely to teaching and research, and reflect professional and academic expertise. The recipient is: 

• John Greden, Rachel Upjohn Professor and professor emeritus of psychiatry; founder and director of the U-M Comprehensive Depression Center; research professor emeritus, Michigan Neuroscience Institute; and founding chair, National Network of Depression Centers. 

Collegiate Research Professorship Award

Ward Manchester

The Collegiate Research Professorship Award honors exceptional scholarly achievement and impact on advancing knowledge in science, engineering, health, education, the arts, the humanities or other academic field of study. Research professors with at least a 60 percent appointment are eligible. The recipient is:

• Ward Manchester, research professor, climate and space sciences and engineering, College of Engineering.

Research Faculty Achievement Award

Lisa Molnar

The Research Faculty Achievement Award honors people who hold at least a 60 percent appointment at the rank of research associate professor, research scientist or associate research scientist. Selection criteria include exceptional scholarly achievements, as evidenced by significant contributions to an academic field of study over time, a specific outstanding discovery or the development of innovative technology or practice. The recipient is:

• Lisa Molnar, research associate professor, behavioral sciences, U-M Transportation Research Institute; and adjunct associate research scientist, psychology, LSA.

Research Faculty Recognition Award

Philip Veliz

The Research Faculty Recognition Award honors people who hold at least a 60 percent appointment at the rank of research assistant professor or assistant research scientist. Selection criteria include exceptional scholarly achievements, as evidenced by publications or other scholarly activities in any academic field of study. The recipient is:

• Philip Veliz, research assistant professor, Institute for Research on Women and Gender; research assistant professor of nursing, School of Nursing; and faculty associate, youth and social issues, Institute for Social Research.

University Press Book Award

Cory Brant

The University Press Book Award is presented to members of the university teaching and research staff, including emeritus members, whose books have added the greatest distinction to the Press List. Selections are made from books published within a span of two calendar years. The recipient is:

• Cory Brant, Great Lakes fishery biologist, U.S. Geological Survey Great Lakes Science Center.

University Librarian Achievement Award

Mark MacEachern

The University Librarian Achievement Award recognizes exceptional distinction reflected in active and innovative career achievements in library, archival or curatorial services. The recipient is:

• Mark MacEachern, informationist, A. Alfred Taubman Health Sciences Library.

University Librarian Recognition Award

Liangyu Fu

The University Librarian Recognition Award recognizes active and innovative early career achievement in library, archival or curatorial services. They are presented to librarians, archivists or curators who have no more than eight years’ practice in his or her profession. The recipient is:

• Liangyu Fu, Chinese studies librarian, senior associate librarian, University Library.
